| Ama Dablam ~ the magical mountain! |
|
| November is a great time to visit the Everest area, less people, clear weather, gorgeous views. We had not been there since 2006 and it is hard to visit Nepal too many years without getting back into the Khumbu! So, after our Mustang trek in October, we headed to the Khumbu with some friends who were honeymooning. We had no particular destination in mind besides "HIGH!" So off we went wandering up the trails, drawn ever higher. People we met were freaked out that we did a GOAL such as "Everest Base Camp" or "Kala Patar." But that was the point...there are just SO many amazing high points in the Khumbu that one does not need a particular destination, such as EBC or KP! I must say, however, that when you do not have an itinerary in the Khumbu, you are DRAWN to Ama Dablam. It happened to me in 2004 and again this fall. That mountain simply draws you in closer AND higher! We ended up trekking to basically every side of Ama Dablam that one can possibly trek without actually climbing the mountain! North, south, east and west. Pete even boogied up to Camp 1 on the mountain! So, following are some of my favorite photos (from literally hundreds) of Ama Dablam, November 2009! |

We would also like to congratulate our friend, Wolf Riehle, who summitted Ama Dablam while we were cheering him on from basecamp! Way to go Wolf. |

On this beautiful summit day in November we witnessed a paraglider who launched from the summit. What an amazing view he must have had from ABOVE the mountain (which is around 22,349 ft). WOW! |

My favorite shot of the season...Ama Dablam at night. If you look closely, you can see the headlamps on the right hand ridgeline. Some of these are from our Sherapa friends who were climbing (actually descending to Camp 2 at this point after a mere 8 hour trip to the summit from basecamp!) and some of the lights are from climbers at Camp 2 & Camp 3. The stars on this night were also amazing! |
